Condolences on the death of Senator Jose Peralta from the Securing Wages Earned Against Theft Coalition (SWEAT)
November 26, 2018
The SWEAT Coalition, comprised of numerous labor organizers, poverty advocates and low-wage workers are deeply saddened by the news of the untimely death of Senator Jose Peralta.
The coalition has worked closely over the years to close loopholes in the law that allow unscrupulous employers to avoid responsibility. Wage theft disproportionately affects workers from low-income households, who are already struggling to make ends meet. It is estimated that low wage workers lose more than $50 billion annually to wage theft, when employers fail to pay workers full wages for their work performed.
Senator Peralta was the bill’s sponsor and dedicated to the passage of this bill. He cared passionately for those impacted by wage theft and was always open to meeting with the victims. He was generous with his time and his staff. Our coalition will not forget his tireless efforts and will honor him with the bill’s passage.
